Covid-19 Hair Loss

Covid-19 Hair Loss

As of February 2023, the WHO indicates more than 60% of the US has contracted Covid-19. Although a wide variety of long-term side effects have been identified, a very common trend seen, is androgenic hair loss in both males and females, after recovering from this disease.

Telogen effluvium (TE), has shown to be one of the most prevalent side effects, for females, after contracting Covid-19. Traditionally, this causes female patients to lose less than half of their hair. However, more severe cases are noted after recovering from this disease. Additionally, it has been found that shedding after recovery tends to be far more rapid in its onset. The stress from this scenario can lead to additional hair loss, not correlated to the TE.

Although hair loss from Covid can correct itself overtime, reports continue to show a control group that continues to suffer long term hair loss, exceeding 9 months’ time. Intervention currently, and corrective action is a necessity, to prevent permanent loss. It is important to note that once a follicle is dead, it cannot be regenerated. With this being true, it is best to treat Covid related hair loss, rather than leaving regrowth to chance.
